What our safety stand-down week taught us

We stopped work on every site for a morning to walk through near misses. Here's what we changed.

In August we paused work on every site for a morning and walked through the near misses logged over the past year.

Three things came out of it. Most near misses happened in the first hour of the day, so pre-starts now include a five-minute walk of the work area. Deliveries were the next biggest cause, so every site now has a marked set-down zone. And people were logging near misses late or not at all, so the SafetyCulture checklist now has a one-tap report.

None of this is clever. It's what a canary is for: noticing early, while it's still easy to do something about it.
